Impactful events can disturb your life, even years after the event...

Maybe something happened that thoroughly upset you, and now you don’t feel as comfortable in other parts of your life as well. Maybe you did try to process it, for instance by talking about it, but somehow your life just doesn’t get back on the rails. You feel listless or restless, down, or you have to force yourself a lot to remain positive, and all of that costs loads of energy.

An impactful event can generate a lot of emotion. My experience is that people wish these emotions away, often because it is so confronting or too much and too overwhelming. And that is when such an emotion behaves a bit like a stubborn message that doesn’t want to leave your inbox.

Symptoms

Not fully listening to stored messages in your internal inbox can result in all kinds of vague symptoms. Maybe you recognise some of it yourself, like: sleep issues, low energy levels, or your patience with yourself or others may run out sooner than usual. Sometimes you rest too much, sometimes way too little. Frequent anxiety and worrying are other symptoms.

Hello!

I am Carolien, therapist and life coach.

As a sensitive, a little shy, a little low on confidence child, I already remember wondering why I could not be like other kids: be confident, just have fun, just do nice things with others. Instead, I was easily emotionally overloaded. I was always ‘switched on’ in an alert state. I was alert to understand and fix the problems I saw around me, and that was not the stuff I could have any control on at that age. I would worry a lot in an attempt to do things right.
I had no idea why I was like this. I was trying so hard to be ‘normal’, and change my behavior and emotions.

When I started therapy, I noticed that that child that I remembered, also changed. I remembered more of how she really felt, the decisions she made, and the way she saw the world. And gradually I could change these things with her by just allowing her to explore her feelings, and the origins of them. I noticed the changes I made for my younger self, in my life as an adult as well – more lightness came into my body, my emotions and my head. I saw everything more calmly, positively and the problems I faced didn’t seem as huge as I saw them earlier. So along with the child I remembered, I had changed my own views of the world and had let go of old tensions, fears and worries.

This type of therapy came in my life after having tried talk therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. These both helped a lot, but I noticed that I would still get stuck. A setback meant having to start over with training myself to think and behave differently. And sometimes that felt too difficult to do. Finally with Emotional Freedom Technique and Inner Child Matrix work, I could let go of the emotions and thoughts I had been struggling with. From the root.

When I had experienced this therapy, I wanted to really learn it to help others too. It was too good an experience and I wished others could experience it too.

Since 2020 I have specialised in EFT tapping, Inner Child Matrix Reimprinting, and NLP. I started seeing people who worried a lot, sometimes had difficulty trusting others, felt their friends let them down, or didn’t reciprocate their friendship, had low confidence in their career because of job loss or rejections, or, had great confidence but still experienced blocks to reach where they wanted. Others had problems figuring out what they really wanted in the first place.
Each of these people had related unprocessed impactful events in their lives. They cried and learnt along with their younger selves, discovered how to love their younger self so they truly felt loved.
And that love, opened up a whole new world to them. They discovered that offering love to yourself, and being loved by yourself, is the key to receiving all things good more fully, and to be able to truly give without needing anything in return. And guess what? Their relationships improved – with parents, siblings, friends. They discovered what they really wanted to do, and developed faith if they didn’t yet know how. They were able to attract the life they wanted.

As a therapist, I am blessed to be able to witness how each person has a treasure in themselves of wisdom and love, and it is an honor to work with each of them.
